We live in an age for the hobby where we're spoiled for choice when it comes to minis, there are a myriad companies, large and small, that are producing a stunningly diverse range of models that are more detailed than anything that I've seen in the past. But that's not to say that there aren't people out there making stuff that harks back to the more old-school feel of minis that I remember from back in the day.
Ramshackle Games is one of those companies, based in Nottingham they offer an entire range of miniatures, vehicles and terrain that's satisfyingly chunky and gritty in terms of it's aesthetic, and recently they made the insanely generous offer of giving away four miniatures for just the price of the postage.
I jumped on this offer as soon as I heard about it, and Ramshackle were kind enough to send me this quartet of robed wastleland wanderers as a result. Based up and painted, they're a striking set of minis, perfect to be slotted into any grimdark or post-apocalyptic setting.
Of course these guys are only a small part of the range that Ramshackle offer, and I chose to order the rather nice Smockington Skelletons to go along with the freebies, as they fit the same look and feel, rounding the group and making them feel more like a coherent gang and less like a random collection of robes weirdos.
The last addition to this group comes in the shape of a little more muscle, an armour-plated hulk that I see serving as the main meat-shield for the group, protecting the more delicate members while moving slowly and with an inevitable accumulation of unstoppable force.
So there you have it - a pretty striking and unique gang for little more than the investment of a tenner, which makes me feel perfectly confident in saying that Ramshackle are a company that are more than worthy of a look and maybe even your support in these trying times.
They're also generous enough to provide a basic version of their Mini Gangs skirmish game available for free, which means that you can hit the table with anything you buy from them super-fast and with a ruleset that's easy enough for kids of all ages to pick up (trust me, I played it with my own little goblins and they loved every minute!).
For the record, most of the terrain in the picture above was made with components from Ramshackle as well!
I don't know if these guys are robots that have begun to think they're human or humans that have been so radically and extensively augmented with cybernetics that they've forgotten that they were ever mainly organic in nature, or some mix of the two.
I definitely see them as being divided between an order militant (the guys with the weapons) and an order contemplative (the guys without the weapons), maybe even that all of the latter are actually so far gone with the task of serving as a living archive that they've become slaved to the taller contemplative that's clutching at his satchel bag.
Whatever the story behind them, let me know what you think, either here or on social media, and check out Ramshackle Games for more of the same goodness.
Nice work and cool looking minis.
